Inspired by the work of David Moss and other artists during the renaissance of the Jewish arts in the 1970’s, I began making ketubot (Jewish marriage contracts) in 1983. During my art studies* I chose to delve into this magical area, celebrating the intertwining of Jewish art, love and marriage. Over the years my directions into this art form have evolved. Although I work in a variety of media, I am currently exploring and pursuing my love of beautiful paper from around the world to make ketubah collages of layered papers, interwoven with text in expressive hand-lettering and calligraphy. Working closely with couples in a collaborative process, I work to elicit the distinctive "alchemy" of their bond, and to reflect this within their ketubah. Over the years, while most of the couples have been Jewish, other couples have also discovered the beauty and specialness of the ketubah, and have commissioned marriage/anniversary art to reflect their own relationships.
I have found the process of working together with couples over the years to be a sweet experience for both me and those I have worked with. This process has helped them to create with me a ketubah/marriage contract genuinely reflective of their love and commitment to one another. I have been honored to be a part of this interweaving of art, love and marriage.
